Video compression works by encoding only the differences between frames rather than storing each frame completely. H.264 is the most compatible codec, supported on virtually every device. H.265 (HEVC) achieves the same quality at roughly half the file size, ideal for 4K content. AV1 is the newest codec, offering even better compression but slower encoding.
The CRF (Constant Rate Factor) setting controls quality — lower values mean better quality and larger files. A CRF of 23 is the default for H.264 and provides excellent quality for most content.
